Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. There are two types of arthritis – osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, with osteoarthritis being the most common of the two in the UK.
Arthritis is not a single disease; the term refers to joint pain or joint disease, and there are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. People of all ages live with arthritis. Arthritis is more common in women and can occur in older people more than younger people.
Common symptoms of arthritis
Symptoms include pain, stiffness, swelling and diminished range of motion in joints. This can vary from mild to severe and may come and go. Some people may not experience any worsening for years, but symptoms can also progress and get worse over time. Arthritis can be severe, resulting in chronic pain, and making daily activities difficult.
