Sporting injuries can often have an obvious cause, but often pain can seem to arrive “out of the blue”, even when you are doing your normal sporting activities. Often an old injury or muscular imbalance may have been causing you to over-compensate, straining certain groups of muscles and making you more susceptible to injury.
We can offer advice on training and especially stretching exercises which make a vital impact on performance and reduce the risk of injury, making sports an enjoyable and rewarding activity.
There are many types of sports injuries that we can treat:
Hip pain from falls, contact injuries or excessive range of movement
Rotated Pelvis (sacro-iliac joint dysfunction) – common in torsional sports such as golf or racquet sports
Spinal pain – often from lifting or landing injuries
Knee pain – ligament injuries are common especially in contact sports, but can also be degenerative damage in weight-bearing sports like running
Ankle joint problems – usually instability injuries causing ligaments to be strained or torn
Achilles tendonitis and heel pain
Shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff tears and tendonitis- common in swimmers
Tennis elbow – inflammation of the extensor muscle tendons in the forearm
Golfers elbow – inflammation of the flexor muscle tendons in the forearm
Repetitive strain injury (RSI) – inflamed tendons from overuse
Strained wrist – commonly from a fall on an outstretched hand
Ankle joint problems – usually instability injuries causing ligaments to be strained or torn
Impact injuries – frequently from contact sports and martial arts
We often use various forms of electrotherapy, such as ultrasound and interferential treatments to aid your recovery. We may combine this with muscular stretches and massage, joint mobilisation and manipulation techniques, depending on the type of injury.
In most cases we suggest exercises and stretches to aid recovery, using a programme of graded exercise progressions to ensure that each stage of your rehabilitation is optimal for where you are at on your recovery journey.
The aim of our treatment is to help you return to sport more quickly and prevent re-injury.
